5 Dead, 1 Critical as SUV Plunges Into 600-Foot Gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban

A devastating accident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district leaves 5 dead and 1 critically injured as an SUV falls into a 600-feet-deep gorge.

The tragic incident occurred on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, one of the most dangerous yet vital lifelines in the region. The vehicle, which was traveling with six people onboard, lost control near Battery Chashma, a known accident-prone spot. Initial reports suggest that the driver may have lost control due to sharp curves and poor visibility during the early hours of the day.

Local authorities, including the Ramban Police and SDRF teams, responded swiftly to the alert. Rescue operations were launched immediately with the assistance of local residents and mountain rescue volunteers. Despite the difficult terrain and challenging weather conditions, five bodies were retrieved, and one critically injured passenger was airlifted to the Government Medical College, Jammu.

The identity of the victims is yet to be formally released, pending notification to families. Preliminary findings suggest the SUV may have been overloaded or faced mechanical failure. Officials are now investigating the incident, and the area remains under surveillance to prevent similar accidents.

This heart-wrenching event has once again raised questions about road safety and infrastructure maintenance in the hilly terrains of Jammu and Kashmir. Locals have called for better guardrails, early warning systems, and frequent maintenance to reduce the risk of such tragedies.

Condolences are pouring in from across the state, and Chief Secretary of J&K has assured that the families of the victims will receive adequate compensation and support.
