Security forces launch major operation in Kishtwar as encounter erupts; Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists suspected to be hiding in the area.
An intense gunfight broke out in the forested region of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Tuesday morning, as security forces launched a cordon and search operation following intelligence inputs about the presence of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists.
According to official sources, multiple units of the Army and J&K Police are involved in the high-risk operation, which began in the early hours of the day. The area has been sealed off, and intermittent firing has been reported, suggesting the presence of at least two to three militants.
Kishtwar, a region that had been relatively calm in recent years, has seen a sudden uptick in militant activity, raising concerns among local residents and authorities. The suspected militants are believed to be part of a sleeper cell of JeM, trying to revive terrorism in the Chenab valley region.
Reinforcements have been rushed to the spot, and drones are being used to monitor the movement within the dense terrain. Authorities have advised civilians to stay indoors and cooperate with the security teams. Schools and public transport have been temporarily suspended in the area as a precautionary measure.
This operation marks a significant moment in the counterterrorism efforts in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the southern districts, where such encounters have become less frequent in recent months. More updates are awaited as the situation continues
to unfold.
