A UP policewoman has come forward with a shocking allegation that she was brutally assaulted by her in-laws for dowry, triggering public outrage and renewed calls for stronger enforcement of anti-dowry laws.
The policewoman, posted in Uttar Pradesh, stated that despite being financially independent and serving in the law enforcement system herself, her in-laws consistently demanded more dowry even after marriage. When she refused to comply, they allegedly attacked her brutally.
She revealed that the harassment had begun soon after her wedding, with constant mental torture, threats, and demands for money and gifts. The situation escalated when the family allegedly assaulted her physically, leaving her injured and terrified for her safety.
Following the incident, she registered a formal FIR against her husband and in-laws under sections related to dowry harassment, domestic violence, and criminal assault. The police department has initiated an internal inquiry while assuring full support to the victim.
The case has sparked widespread anger, especially because it involves a woman working within the police force—an institution meant to protect citizens from such crimes. Women's rights activists have argued that if a policewoman is not safe from dowry harassment, the condition of ordinary women is even more concerning.
Legal experts insist that the case highlights the urgent need for stronger implementation of the Dowry Prohibition Act and better protection mechanisms for women facing domestic abuse. The incident has once again opened a national conversation about dowry culture, domestic violence, and the challenges faced by women in India, regardless of their p
rofession.
