M.V. Ramana Reddy: A man behind design of Telangana Martyrs Memorial

MV Ramana Reddy (Machennagari Venkat Ramana Reddy) is the chief designer and architect of Telangana Martyrs Memorial. The artist Ramana Reddy who designed it in the shape of a 'diya with light'. Reddy is the president of Hyderabad Art Society and founder of Telangana Artist Forum.

MV Ramana Reddy Sculpture Artist from Telangana

 

The stainless steel building, which took 177.5 crore to build and covers 3.29 acres, is right next to the new secretariat complex. Its total size is 2.88 lakh square feet. The building has six floors of different heights, plus two floors below ground level. There is an elliptical diya (lamp) on top of the building. Its main axis is 54 meters long and its minor axis is 37 meters long. The diya is 26 meters tall on one side and 18 meters tall on the other. The flame structure is 26 meters above the patio level. Fourteen meters above the ground, the flame is 45 meters high.


Telangana Martyrs Memorial was inaugurated in June 2023 by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. Ramana Reddy had shown four designs to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who felt the earthen lamp design matched his vision.

 

Telangana Martyrs Memorial also known as Telangana Amara Jyothi and Amaraveerula Stupam is a monument built for 369 students who died during the 1969 agitation for a separate Telangana state. It is designed by MV Ramana Reddy.

 

Ramana Reddy’s design was inspired by an earthen clay lamp (called Clay Diya). This is a sculpture with an internal function, containing approx. 41,615 Sft. of utility space inside. The outer surface in the mirror finish reflects the surroundings. The project is made of stainless steel (316 L).

 

Speaking to Bru Times, M.V. Ramana Reddy, the designer and main architect of Telangana Martyrs Memorial, said that he is confident it will put the State on a global stage. “It is a moment of pride and a rare honour,”. Artist Ramana Reddy who designed it in the shape of a ‘diya with light.


Who is MV Ramana Reddy?
Machennagari Venkat Ramana Reddy better known as MV Ramana Reddy was born on 10th July, 1965 in Hyderabad, Telangana. 

 

Reddy was on 10 July 1966 in Siddipet of [[Telangana state. He completed his masters in Fine Arts (MFA in Sculpture) from Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University (JNAFAU) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (Gold Medallist in Sculpture) at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad in 1991. He is the fellow of The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) fellowship for German academic and PT Reddy fellowship.

 

Two books were written on the life of MV Ramana Reddy; 1. "M. V. Ramana Reddy, Path to Artistic Brilliance – A Journey Unveiled”, written in 2023 by Koeli Mukherjee Ghose. 2. "Ramana Reddy - Precious Naivete" which was written by Marta Jakimowicz.
