A Miami-based tech CEO, Onur Aksoy, has been sentenced to over six years in prison for running a large-scale scheme selling counterfeit Cisco equipment. Aksoy, who also used aliases like Ron Aksoy and Dave Durden, pleaded guilty in June 2023 to charges including conspiracy, mail fraud, and wire fraud.

Massive Counterfeit Operation

Through a network of 19 companies and online storefronts operating under the umbrella name "Pro Network Entities," Aksoy resold counterfeit Cisco products with an estimated retail value exceeding $1 billion. These fake networking devices were sold on popular online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay between 2013 and 2022.

The counterfeit equipment infiltrated critical infrastructure, compromising the security of both private and public sectors. Alarmingly, some of these fake devices ended up in sensitive U.S. government systems used by the Navy, Air Force, and Army.

Fallout and Restitution

As part of the plea agreement, Aksoy is required to pay $100 million in restitution to Cisco and other victims impacted by his fraudulent operation. The court also ordered the destruction of millions of dollars worth of counterfeit products seized from Aksoy's businesses.

This case highlights the dangers of counterfeit technology and the importance of vigilance when purchasing equipment, especially for critical infrastructure. It also serves as a warning to those who attempt to exploit trust for personal gain.
