Tech Giant, Google Cuts off Hundreds of Jobs in Various Divisions

Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has announced significant layoffs within its workforce, specifically targeting employees involved in the development of the voice-activated Google Assistant software. Additionally, a comparable number of positions within the company's Devices and Services team are being eliminated.

Those impacted by the layoffs include employees engaged in the development of the voice-centric Google Assistant and those associated with the augmented reality hardware team. The company has also confirmed that workers within the central engineering organization have been affected by these cuts, according to reports by Bloomberg.

According to a Reuters report, the layoffs within Google Assistant, initially brought to light by the news platform Semafor, are integral to organizational adjustments implemented since the latter half of 2023. These changes have also encompassed layoffs within the company's mapping app, Waze.

The company has confirmed the elimination of several hundred positions within its Devices and Services team, with the majority concentrated in the 1P AR hardware team. This affirmation aligns with a report by the tech media website 9to5Google, which initially disclosed the details of the reorganization.

The confirmation has been provided by the company regarding the termination of hundreds of positions, predominantly affecting the teams responsible for the development of the voice-based Google Assistant and the augmented reality hardware. Additionally, employees in the central engineering organization are also subject to job cuts.

A spokesperson from Google clarified that these modifications are a continuation of the company's ongoing initiatives aimed at improving efficiency and optimizing resource allocation. The spokesperson highlighted that numerous adjustments were implemented within the teams throughout the latter half of 2023 to enhance efficiency and foster a positive work culture. As part of aligning resources with their primary product focuses, certain roles were globally eliminated.
