Open Letter to Rahul Gandhi: Sharmistha Mukherjee Demands Justice for Online Harassment

New Delhi: Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, lodged a police complaint on Friday, claiming she had experienced sexual harassment on social media from someone closely associated with the Congress party. In an open letter to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, she sought justice, stating, "As @RahulGandhi talks about #Nyay, I demand Nyay for character-assassination against me and my father in his name." Mukherjee accused a supposed Congress supporter of harassment, linking it to the recent release of her book about her father. She tagged the Delhi Police on social media before formally filing a complaint with the Gurgaon Police, given her residence there.

Despite her past association with the Congress, having contested the 2015 Delhi Assembly polls, Mukherjee asserted that she has since distanced herself from politics. In another communication directed at Rahul Gandhi, she expressed her dismay over the alleged abuse, linking the account responsible to a "close associate of Congress" followed by senior members of the party's social media team.

Upon being contacted for a statement, Mukherjee verified that she had officially lodged a complaint with the cybercrime unit of the Gurgaon Police. A senior police officer assured that they are committed to offering full assistance to Mukherjee in addressing the matter.
