Honda Motor Co. revved up its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions in North America with a groundbreaking announcement – an $11 billion investment to establish a comprehensive EV value chain in Ontario, Canada. This strategic move positions Canada as a central hub for Honda's future electric mobility endeavors. The new facility, slated to begin production in 2028, will encompass a new assembly plant, a battery plant, and supporting infrastructure for the manufacturing of both all-electric and fuel cell vehicles. With a projected annual capacity of 240,000 vehicles, this investment signifies Honda's unwavering commitment to its target of offering exclusively zero-emission vehicles by 2040.

This decision by Honda might raise eyebrows considering recent industry trends of tempered EV projections. However, Honda emphasizes this investment as a strategic play for the anticipated surge in EV demand across North America. The battery plant itself boasts a projected production capacity of 36 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year, signifying a long-term vision for the future of electric mobility. Beyond environmental benefits, the project promises significant economic advantages for Canada. The construction and operation of the EV hub are expected to generate at least 1,000 new jobs, adding to Honda's existing workforce of 4,200 in Ontario.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hailed this investment as the largest ever witnessed in the country's automotive industry, further emphasizing its potential to bolster Canada's economic landscape. The project is also expected to benefit from government support, with estimates suggesting upwards of CA$2.5 billion in tax credits and incentives from Canadian authorities.

This Canadian project follows Honda's previous announcement of a $4.4 billion investment in a battery plant located in Ohio, USA. Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe emphasized the company's commitment to establishing a robust EV ecosystem across North America, stating, "We will strengthen our EV supply system and capability with an eye toward a future increase in EV demand in North America."

While Honda has initiated the evaluation process and discussions with potential joint venture partners, the company expects to finalize the plans within the next six months. This collaborative approach signifies Honda's commitment to building a sustainable future for electric mobility in North America, with Canada playing a pivotal role in this clean energy transformation.
