Centre Extends Shutdown of 24 Airports Until May 15 as India-Pakistan Tensions Rise

The move follows heightened cross-border tensions and also witnessed Pakistani drone and missile activity focused on critical Indian military areas.

Centre Extends Shutdown of 24 Airports Until May 15 as India-Pakistan Tensions Rise

Due to growing hostilities with Pakistan, the Indian government has further prolonged the suspension of civil flight services at 24 airports until May 15 at 5:29 AM. This action is a follow-up to recent attacks by Pakistani drones and missiles against areas in Jammu, Punjab, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.

Impacted airports are major ones such as Srinagar, Amritsar, and Leh, among others at Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Bhuntar, Kishangarh, Patiala, Shimla, Jaisalmer, Pathankot, Jammu, Bikaner, and Porbandar. The shutdown has caused extensive flight cancellations and rescheduling, affecting domestic and international travel.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed airlines and airports across the country to tighten security. Passengers are asked to report to airports at least three hours before departure, bring identification, and keep carry-on luggage to a single piece weighing a maximum of 7 kg. Secondary screening has been put in place, and visitor access to terminal buildings has been curtailed.

Increased security follows with greater cross-border tension. India reports intercepting numerous Pakistani missiles and drones heading toward military camps at Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur, where casualties have been unreported. By contrast, India has accused Pakistan of mounting drone attacks with accompanying civilian casualties that have claimed an uncounted number, according to the assertions of Islamabad's claims against them, but has denied so doing.

The recent conflict has interupted life in the region. Educational facilities have been shut down in many states such as Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. Blackouts have been mandated in frontier districts as a measure of precaution. Major sports like the Indian Premier League have been postponed, and international travel alerts have been changed to conform to the unsettled environment.

Global responses have been guarded. Though nations such as Iran have suggested mediation, the United States declared that the crisis is an internal issue between Pakistan and India with no plans for intervention.

With tensions continuing, governments call for citizens to stay alert, comply with safety advisories, and stay informed from official sources.
