Lucknow has earned global recognition as UNESCO’s ‘Creative City of Gastronomy,’ celebrating its rich Awadhi cuisine and centuries-old culinary traditions.
This prestigious title was conferred by UNESCO as part of its Creative Cities Network (UCCN), which recognizes cities demonstrating innovation and creativity in fields such as music, film, literature, design, and gastronomy. Lucknow joins the list of global culinary hubs that preserve and promote traditional food cultures while fostering sustainable urban development.
Known as the “City of Nawabs,” Lucknow’s cuisine has long been an expression of royal sophistication and cultural fusion. Dishes like Galouti Kebab, Tunday Kebab, Nihari, and Lucknowi Biryani have not only defined the city’s flavor but also told stories of Mughal and Awadhi influences passed down through generations of master chefs, or rakabdars.
UNESCO’s recognition will boost culinary tourism, encourage local artisans, and preserve traditional cooking methods that have stood the test of time. The title will also inspire initiatives to promote local produce, food festivals, and sustainable gastronomy practices in the region.
As a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, Lucknow joins other Indian cities like Varanasi (Music) and Jaipur (Crafts and Folk Art), further solidifying India’s diverse cultural legacy on the globa
l stage.
