Surveying and Planning for Safe Recovery of Containership Dali Underway with Unified Command Leadership.

Dive teams are currently engaged in comprehensive surveys of the containership Dali to facilitate the strategic planning necessary for its recovery. Simultaneously, the Unified Command has confirmed the positioning of assets to initiate the intricate process of extracting intact containers from the vessel's bow.

Recent photographs reveal the presence of a significant crane strategically stationed near the bow of the ship. Additionally, it has been disclosed by the Unified Command that two cranes onsite have been designated for the task of relocating containers from the vessel's bow.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore, in an announcement on Wednesday evening, highlighted that the Unified Command was poised to commence container lifting operations. However, no specific timeline has been made public for the initiation of this operation.

In daily press briefings, Rear Admiral Shannon Gilbreath, Commander of the USCG 5th District, emphasized the importance of ensuring crew safety during the removal process, particularly in accessing embedded portions of the bridge. Gilbreath underscored the necessity of favorable weather conditions for executing the container removal operations.

Visual evidence from the site delineates the extent of damage to the vessel's bow and the precarious state of the container stacks. Attention is primarily directed towards containers posing risks to crew safety due to leaning or instability. Drawing from past experiences, such as the Ever Forward incident in April 2022, the intricate nature of box removal underscores the challenges ahead.

Divers contracted under the U.S. Navy's supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV) have been actively conducting surveys on the Dali's hull, with a focus on assessing damage and identifying grounding locations. Information gathered by these divers informs the development of a salvage plan geared towards the vessel's safe recovery, as emphasized by Unified Command spokespersons.
