Nehal Modi Arrested in the U.S. Following India’s Extradition Request

Nehal Modi, brother of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi, has been arrested in the United States following an extradition request from Indian authorities.

The arrest comes as part of India’s persistent efforts to bring to justice those involved in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, one of the biggest financial scams in the country’s history. Nehal Modi is accused of assisting his brother Nirav Modi in laundering money and destroying crucial evidence linked to the ₹13,000 crore scam.

According to sources familiar with the matter, U.S. law enforcement agencies acted on an Interpol Red Notice and the official extradition request sent by the Indian government. Nehal, a Belgian citizen, was reportedly detained in New York and is currently undergoing extradition proceedings.

This arrest adds a new layer to the high-profile PNB fraud case, which has already seen Nirav Modi fighting a legal battle against extradition in the United Kingdom. Indian authorities believe Nehal played a significant role in the financial operations of Nirav Modi’s international network and may possess vital information regarding the movement of illicit funds.

Legal experts suggest that extraditing Nehal Modi to India could strengthen the prosecution’s case and bring the investigation closer to a conclusion. However, the process could be prolonged due to complex legal formalities between the U.S. and India.

This development has reignited debates about international cooperation on economic offenses, and India’s resolve to bring back fugitives who escape under the shadow of high-profile crimes.

Stay tuned for more updates as the extradition process unfolds.
