Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Protesting Junior Doctors Present Police Commissioner with 'Spine' in Bold Critique

During a protest against the rape and killing of a doctor in a Kolkata street, activists and health professionals hold posters and yell slogans as they form a long human chain.

Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Protesting Junior Doctors Present Police Commissioner with 'Spine' in Bold Critique

Tensions escalated in Kolkata as protesting junior doctors, outraged by the handling of a recent rape-murder case, symbolically presented the city’s Police Commissioner with a 'spine.' This provocative gesture comes amidst widespread public anger over the perceived inefficacy and inaction of the police in dealing with the brutal crime.

Junior doctors protested outside police headquarters in Kolkata's Lalbazar area, after which they met Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal. They presented him with a letter demanding his resignation due to alleged negligence regarding the rape and murder of a female doctor within a medical institution. After a 22-hour standoff, a delegation from the West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum met with the officer and gave him a human spine model.

The forum has declared that they will continue to protest until their demands are fulfilled. Employees from other private hospitals in Kolkata also protested by creating human chains around the city's zones.

The Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024 was unanimously approved by the West Bengal government in response to mounting pressure to take action. It aims to change federal legislation at the state level to toughen penalties for serious offenses against women and children.

Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has also been suspended by the state health department. Ghosh and three others were placed under eight days of CBI custody after being accused of mistakes and corruption. Ghosh was taken into custody by the agency in connection with the hospital's financial issues.

As protests continue to intensify, the situation in Kolkata remains tense. The junior doctors have vowed to continue their strike until they see concrete action from the police and the government. Meanwhile, the city waits anxiously for developments in the case, hoping that justice will be served swiftly.
