VS Achuthanandan, Former Kerala CM and CPI-M Icon, Passes Away at 101

Veteran Communist leader and former Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan passed away at the age of 101, leaving behind a legacy of relentless activism and public service.

VS Achuthanandan, a towering figure in Indian politics and a founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), breathed his last on Sunday at the age of 101. His death marks the end of an era in Kerala’s political landscape, where he served with unmatched integrity, passion, and commitment for decades.

Achuthanandan was admitted to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram due to age-related ailments and had been under medical supervision for several weeks. Despite his advanced age, he remained mentally sharp and politically aware till his final days.

During his long political career, he served as the 11th Chief Minister of Kerala from 2006 to 2011 and was renowned for his anti-corruption stance, land reform advocacy, and strong opposition to communalism. He was also instrumental in spearheading environmental campaigns and upholding democratic values.

Born in 1923, Achuthanandan came from humble beginnings and rose through the ranks through sheer dedication and unwavering commitment to Marxist ideology. His speeches, sharp critiques, and ground-level activism inspired generations of political thinkers and workers across India.

Condolences have poured in from across the political spectrum, with national leaders, party members, and citizens remembering him as a symbol of simplicity, sacrifice, and public welfare.

His contributions to Kerala’s governance, social justice, and working-class movements will be remembered as an indelible part of Indian political history. The state government is likely to declare a period of mourning and organize a state funeral to honor his memory.
