PEC expresses concern over suspicious journo-deaths

Geneva: Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), the global media safety and rights body, expresses serious concern over repeated deaths of Bangladeshi journalists in mysterious situations and urges the interim government in Dhaka to launch a genuine probe to find the reasons behind their unusual fatalities.

Local media reported on 1 September 2025 that Khulna-based scribe Wahed-uz-Zaman Bulu was found dead on Sunday evening as the police recovered his body from under Rupsa bridge of Bangladesh. A resident of Sonadanga upazila of Khulna district, Wahed-uz-Zaman (60) used to work for Dainik Ajker Kagoj, Sangbad Pratidin and also the United News of Bangladesh.

Earlier, on 22 August, the body of missing journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar was recovered from the bank of the Meghna River. A resident of Siddheshwari locality in Dhaka, Bibhuranjan (70) was associated with Bangla daily Ajker Patrika.  Beginning his career as a rural correspondent for Dainik Azad, Bibhuranjan later worked for Dainik Matribhumi, Saptahik Chaltipatra, and Saptahik Mridubhashan too.
“Bangladesh continues to witness mysterious deaths and also physical & mental harassment of journalists in recent days. Within a year, the South Asian nation recorded over 500 cases of harassment to media persons. We demand fair probes in every case while ensuring the media's safety as Bangladesh prepares for the 13th national elections for Jatiya Sansad in the first week of February 2026,” said Blaise Lempen, president of PEC (pressemblem.ch).

PEC’s South & Southeast Asia representative Nava Thakuria informs that the 170 million nation lost three journalists, namely Md Asaduzzaman Tuhin, Anwar Hossain, and Khandaker Shah Alam, to assailants to date this year. Tuhin worked for the Mymensingh-based newspaper Dainik Pratidiner Kagoj and he was hacked to death by a group of miscreants on 7 August in the Gazipur locality near Dhaka. On the other hand, Dainik Bangladesher Alo reporter Hossain was also killed in Gazipur on 6 August. Alam was associated with Dainik Materi Jagat and killed on 25 June in Dhaka’s Nabinagar locality.
