Athens, Greece– A seemingly festive display turned catastrophic when fireworks launched from a yacht sparked a forest fire on a popular Greek island. The incident, which occurred late Saturday night, led to the swift arrest of thirteen individuals.

The yacht, anchored near the island’s coast, was hosting a private party. As part of the celebrations, a fireworks display was set off. However, strong winds carried the embers onto the island, igniting dry brush and rapidly spreading to the surrounding forest area.

Local authorities were alerted almost immediately as the fire quickly grew out of control. Firefighters and emergency services were dispatched to the scene, working through the night to contain the blaze. Aerial support, including water-dropping helicopters, was also employed to combat the fire from above.

"The conditions were challenging," said a spokesperson for the fire department. "The combination of dry vegetation and strong winds made it difficult to control the spread of the fire."

Thanks to the concerted efforts of the fire department and volunteers, the blaze was brought under control by early Sunday morning. However, not before it had burned several hectares of forest land, causing significant ecological damage and threatening nearby homes and tourist facilities.

The individuals arrested include the yacht’s owner, the event organizer, and several guests who were involved in setting off the fireworks. They are facing charges of negligence leading to a fire and environmental destruction. If convicted, they could face substantial fines and prison sentences.

"This is a stark reminder of the potential consequences of irresponsible behavior," said a local government official. "Fireworks should never be used in such proximity to flammable natural areas, especially during the dry summer months."

Local residents and environmental groups have expressed their outrage and are calling for stricter regulations and enforcement regarding the use of fireworks and similar activities on the island.

This incident highlights the delicate balance between tourism and environmental preservation on Greek islands, which are renowned for their natural beauty and attract millions of visitors each year. Authorities are urging all visitors and locals to adhere to safety regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, the focus will be on preventing future occurrences and ensuring accountability for the actions that led to this destructive fire.
