The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms with rain in Delhi today, while a red warning has been issued for the Konkan and Goa coasts because of a strengthening low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea.
People in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) can expect light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning, and wind speeds of 30–50 km/h. This will last till May 24, providing some respite from the current heat.
The IMD has issued a red alert for the Konkan and Goa regions, anticipating extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds ranging from 50–60 km/h, gusting up to 70 km/h, over the next three days. This development is attributed to a low-pressure area that has formed over the east-central Arabian Sea off the south Konkan-Goa coast, which is likely to intensify into a depression within 36 hours.
Following the prediction, the IMD has warned residents in the affected region to be cautious, refrain from traveling unnecessarily, and remain informed with respect to the latest weather alerts. Fishermen are especially cautioned not to sail into the sea because of rough seas.
IMD's alerts are more widespread than Delhi and Konkan-Goa areas. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall will occur in coastal areas of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala in the next few days. Furthermore, the prospects are improving for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala in the next 2–3 days.
Citizens in all the affected areas are advised to remain updated through official sources and conform to safety protocols in a bid to counter the effects of the harsh weather conditions.
