Early Olympics berths huge boost for table tennis

On Monday, world rankings determined which men's and women's teams qualified. In addition, it offers two separate locations in Paris or more. All could smile quietly on February 21, the day India's World Team Table Tennis Championship campaign came to an end. They were able to speak openly about it on March 4, the day India's Olympic venue was officially announced. Only one male and one female singles player from India competed in table tennis in Beijing. Paris was guaranteed six quotas and room for more.

The team quota also guarantees two places in the singles competitions. This is the biggest cause for celebration in a sport that has recently been plagued by off-field issues (federation expulsions, dramatic selections, court cases). The Indian teams finished in the top 16 of the Team Worlds held in Busan last month, guaranteeing them a place in the Olympics through the ranking system. The competition demonstrated the existing depth and potential of Indian TT (as well as the work that still needs to be done to make it one of the best teams in the world).

"We have already started working on the plans and time plays a major role," said Mehta. “It is a remarkable achievement for both teams to qualify for the first time. It's a huge day for table tennis in India.
