In the aftermath of the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 dead, security forces have initiated an intensive operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district. On Wednesday, a gunfight broke out during a cordon and search operation in the Tangmarg area of Kulgam after intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists. The encounter began when militants fired at the security forces. No casualties have been reported so far, and the operation is still ongoing. Earlier in the day, security personnel repelled an infiltration bid on the Line of Control in Baramulla district, killing two terrorists.

The Pahalgam attack on Tuesday is one of the deadliest in the region in years. Militants fired at a group of tourists in the Baisaran area, killing 26 and injuring 17. A new group, "Kashmir Resistance," took responsibility, accusing the victims of being undercover agents associated with Indian security forces.

In reaction to the growing violence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shortened his foreign visit to Saudi Arabia and came back to India to take charge. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah have also been personally involved in managing the security response. The government has promised to prosecute the attackers and has enhanced security arrangements across the country.

The recent upsurge in militant activities has put a shadow on the stability of the region and the government's move to improve tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. The attacks have instilled mass fear among both locals and tourists, with many of them fleeing the area.
