This parliamentary seat is made up of 2 districts of the state Ballia and Deoria. Salempur is known as the oldest tehsil headquarters of the state. It was established in 1939 as a tehsil in the British era. The Chutki Gandak river passes near Salempur and there is also a major station of the North Eastern Railway (NER) here.
