Desi Defence Boost: Navy To Induct 1st Shallow Water Craft

In a significant stride towards naval self-reliance, India is set to induct its first indigenously built Shallow Water Craft, marking a new chapter in coastal defence capabilities.

This compact yet powerful vessel is part of the Indian Navy’s long-term vision to strengthen maritime security in shallow and littoral zones. Designed and constructed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the Shallow Water Craft (SWC) will play a critical role in anti-submarine warfare (ASW), surveillance, and patrolling in coastal waters.

The vessel’s advanced sonar systems, lightweight structure, and high manoeuvrability make it ideal for operations in narrow or shallow areas where larger ships cannot function effectively. With its induction, the Navy boosts not just its tactical depth but also sends a clear message about India’s growing competence in indigenous defence production.

Officials have lauded this milestone as a symbol of India’s shift from a buyer to a builder in the defence sector. With more such crafts already in the pipeline, this induction is only the beginning of a broader transformation.
