A Comprehensive Weather Update Across North India

Dense fog in Delhi, Punjab, and Northern region, forecasted by India Meteorological Department

A Comprehensive Weather Update Across North India

The India Meteorological Department has indicated that dense to very dense fog is expected to persist over Northwest and certain parts of adjoining Central India in the upcoming two to three days. According to the IMD, conditions of dense to very dense fog are highly likely to endure in numerous areas of Punjab from the 27th to the 31st of December, some regions of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh from the 27th to the 29th of December, and over isolated pockets of north Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh on the 27th of December.

The department's forecasts indicate that between the 27th and 29th of December, certain areas of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh will experience thick fog. On the 27th of December, specific pockets in north Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh will also encounter such weather conditions. Dense fog is defined as visibility ranging from 50 meters to 200 meters.

Already, dense fog conditions in parts of north India have disrupted train and plane schedules, affecting both domestic and international routes. An orange alert has been issued for Delhi on December 27, followed by a yellow alert for Thursday.

On Tuesday, a substantial layer of fog covered various parts of Punjab and Haryana, persisting due to the prevailing cold weather conditions. An official from the Meteorological Department reported instances of very dense fog in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Halwara, Bathinda, and Faridkot in Punjab, as well as Karnal, Hisar, Ambala, and Sirsa in Haryana. The absence of rain is anticipated for the next three days, and a red warning has already been issued for Punjab and Haryana.

The weather department indicates that a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to impact Northwest India from the 30th of December. Under its influence, light isolated rainfall is likely over Northwest and adjoining Central India from the 30th of December to the 2nd of January 2024.

On the 26th of December, dense fog reduced visibility in numerous areas, causing delays for approximately 30 flights, including international ones, at the Delhi airport. Additionally, 14 trains experienced disruptions due to the challenging weather conditions.

The weather department in Jammu and Kashmir anticipates ongoing dry weather with moderate to dense fog prevailing in Central Kashmir, Pulwama, and Baramulla until December 31. According to the Meteorological forecast, there is a likelihood of light rain and snow in scattered areas, accompanied by cloudy skies during January 1-2.

Furthermore, a new western disturbance is expected over Northwest India from the 30th of December, potentially leading to rainfall in certain regions. The IMD has also projected light to moderate rainfall over Coastal Tamil Nadu from the 30th of December 2023 to the 1st of January 2024.
