Bollywood actress, Janhvi Kapoor, made a very sweet and stylish debut at the 2025 Cannes with a note to her late mother, legendary Sridevi, and what she wore.
Walking the red carpet on May 20 for the premiere of her film Homebound, Janhvi wore a custom blush pink lehenga gown designed by Tarun Tahiliani, which was shot with a metallic sheen and had a sheer veil falling from the bun on the back of her head, reminiscent of Sridevi's sophisticated spirit. The lehenga's handwoven tissue fabric is made of a special weave in Banaras and hand-crushed textured fabric that highlights traditional Indian craftsmanship.
Diet Sabya, fashion commentator, remarked about the resemblance, saying, "Janhvi channelling mother Sri for first Cannes red carpet Lewk." Fans echoed this statement with comments such as "It’s giving Sridevi" and "Reminded me of Sridevi."
Janhvi walked the red carpet alongside her Homebound co-stars Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, director Neeraj Ghaywan, and producer Karan Johar. The movie follows the tale of two friends from a North Indian village and how they challenge their friendship while pursuing careers as police officers, and it was screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival, with legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese coming on board as the film's executive producer.
Janhvi also had in support her sister, Khushi Kapoor, along with her boyfriend, Shikhar Pahariya, which is a testament of how meaningfully personal this moment was for Janhvi.
Even though Janhvi's look garnered general admiration for its sophistication and emotional pull, some netizens had mixed feelings and even went as far as to compare her look to a bridal look. However, the overall tribute to Sridevi was both acknowledged and appreciated overall.
Janhvi Kapoor's debut at Cannes was both a great milestone in her career, and a beautiful tribute to her mother, and her useful life and work in Indian cinema.
