Tsunami Threat Passes in Philippines and Indonesia After Powerful Earthquake

Tsunami warnings in the Philippines and Indonesia have been lifted after a powerful undersea earthquake triggered temporary alerts, sparking brief panic before the threat passed.

According to geological agencies, the quake struck with considerable strength near Mindanao in the southern Philippines and parts of eastern Indonesia late Thursday night. The initial tremors prompted authorities to issue tsunami alerts and urge residents in coastal areas to seek higher ground immediately.

Within an hour, monitoring centers across the Pacific region reported that sea level changes were minor and posed no significant threat. Consequently, the tsunami warnings were officially lifted in both countries.

Residents described feeling intense shaking that lasted for several seconds. Many evacuated homes and schools, fearing large waves. The Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) confirmed that emergency protocols worked efficiently and no major infrastructure damage occurred.

Indonesia’s meteorological agency (BMKG) also stated that although aftershocks were expected, the risk of a destructive tsunami had passed. The region remains on alert for secondary tremors, a common occurrence after such powerful seismic events.

The earthquake serves as another reminder of the vulnerability of nations within the Pacific Ring of Fire — an area where tectonic plates frequently collide, causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and stay updated through official communication channels.

International organizations commended the prompt actions taken by both governments, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and public awareness in minimizing disa

ster impact.
