Jaya Prada Gets 6 months jail for non payment of ESI

On August 11, 2023, the Chennai High Court declared renowned actress Jaya Prada guilty in an old case and sentenced her to 6 months in prison and a Rs 5000 fine.

 

Ram Kumar and Raja Babu, her business partners, were also found guilty.

 

Jaya had a theatre in Chennai that was closed down. The theatre workers eventually filed a complaint against her for failing to pay the ESI money that was taken from their salary. The workers claimed that their ESI payments were not made to the Government Insurance Corporation. The Labour Government Insurance Corporation thereafter filed a complaint against Jaya Prada and her friends in Chennai's Egmore Magistrate Court. According to reports, Jaya agreed to the charges and promised to pay off the outstanding debts while also requesting that the case be dismissed. However, the court denied her appeal and sentenced her to a fine and imprisonment.

Jaya Prada is an Indian politician and actress. In the late '70s, '80s, and early '90s, she was regarded as one of the most iconic and influential actresses in both the Telugu and Hindi cinema. She has received three Filmfare Awards South and has appeared in numerous Telugu and Hindi films, as well as Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, and Marathi films. In 1994, She left the film industry at the height of her success and join the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and enter into the politics. From 2004 to 2014, she served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. 

 

Jaya Prada is best known for her films such as  Sharaabi (1984),  Tohfa (1984), Maqsad (1984), Sanjog (1985), Aakhree Raasta (1986), Simhasanam (1986), Sindoor (1987), Samsaram (1988), Elaan-E-Jung (1989), Aaj Ka Arjun (1990), Thanedaar (1990), Maa (1991), Habba (1999), Shabdavedhi (2000), Devadoothan (2000) and Pranayam (2011).
