Aadhaar to Be Used for Voter Identity in Bihar SIR Exercise, EC Informs Supreme Court

The Election Commission has informed the Supreme Court that Aadhaar will be used for voter identity verification in the upcoming Summary Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar.

This development comes as part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to strengthen transparency in the electoral process and ensure that voter rolls are free from duplication and inaccuracies.

According to the EC, linking Aadhaar with voter ID is aimed at improving efficiency in the voter verification process and minimizing instances of multiple entries or fraudulent voting. The step also aligns with the Commission’s larger digital initiatives to streamline electoral rolls across the country.

The Supreme Court was hearing a matter related to the use of Aadhaar in electoral processes when the EC made this submission. While privacy concerns around Aadhaar usage have been raised in the past, the Commission assured that the integration is being carried out strictly within legal boundaries and with proper safeguards in place.

The Bihar SIR exercise will serve as a significant test case for this initiative, potentially paving the way for Aadhaar-based voter verification in future elections nationwide. The move is expected to make electoral rolls more accurate and reduce the scope for electoral malprac

tices.
