Pets are a part of our family, but sometimes a small act of them can prove to be fatal. Due to licking a minor wound by his pet dog, Manjeet not only contracted a life-threatening disease like sepsis, but he also lost both his arms and legs.
How did this creepy scene start?
Over a weekend in July 2025, pharmacy employee Manjeet felt mild fever and fatigue. The next morning, her husband found her unconscious. His lips were blue and his hands and feet were as cold as ice. On arrival at the hospital, doctors found that he had sepsis.
Doctors believe that the bacteria called Capnocytophaga canimorsus, which is found in the dog's saliva, entered Manjit's body through a minor scratch. After this, his body's immune system went out of control and started damaging his own organs.
Sepsis: A 'silent killer'
Sepsis is also often referred to as "blood poisoning". It occurs when the body reacts so aggressively to an infection that its own organs begin to fail.
How serious was Manjeet's condition?
Within 24 hours of infection, she slipped into a coma. In the hospital, his heart stopped beating 6 times (Cardiac Arrest). Doctors had to amputate both his arms and both legs below the knee to save his limbs and prevent the poison from spreading. He had to undergo serious procedures like pneumonia, gallstones and spleen removal.
Recognize the symptoms of sepsis
1. High fever with tremors
2. Rapid heartbeat and breathlessness.
3. Confusion or fainting.
4. Strange rashes or rashes on the skin.
5. Decreased urination volume.
Although it is very rare for such a serious condition to occur from dog licking, doctors still have some important advice. If the pet licks a cut or scratch, wash it thoroughly with soap and water immediately. If swelling or redness increases around the wound, see a doctor immediately. People who have low immunity should take special precautions.
