In a landmark move, the government has launched a national legal aid initiative aimed at providing free and timely legal assistance to Indian soldiers and ex-servicemen facing legal issues in personal or service-related matters.

This program is designed to support armed forces personnel—both serving and retired—who often struggle with navigating complex legal systems, especially in rural or remote postings.

The initiative will be implemented under the aegis of the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Department of Justice. A network of empanelled lawyers will provide assistance across criminal, civil, family, and service-related cases. Legal aid desks will be established in cantonments, military hospitals, and veterans’ welfare offices, ensuring outreach even in interior areas.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that this step is aimed at "upholding the dignity of our jawans who defend the nation selflessly." He emphasized that timely legal support is critical in maintaining the morale and wellbeing of armed forces families.

Additionally, the scheme includes digital access to legal consultations, helplines, and awareness workshops. Training will also be given to military personnel to raise awareness of their rights under various laws.

Veterans' associations have welcomed the move, calling it a “long-overdue” step in recognizing the holistic needs of soldiers beyond the battlefield.

This initiative not only empowers soldiers legally but also reinforces the nation’s commitment to their welfare, dignity, and justice.
