The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is designed to function as a comprehensive registry of all citizens of India. The 2003 revision to the Citizenship Act of 1955 mandated its creation. The NRC's principal objective is to document all authentic Indian nationals, facilitating the identification and expulsion of unlawful immigrants. The implementation of the NRC commenced in Assam during 2013–2014. In 2021, the Government of India declared plans to expand its implementation nationwide; however, this has not yet transpired.
