Chandigarh Mayoral Polls: Allegations of Vote Tampering Against Anil Masih, Poll Officer

The Supreme Court, on Monday, February 5th, strongly criticized the poll officer for irregularities observed in the Chandigarh mayoral elections. The court conveyed extreme shock at the method of vote tampering by Anil Maish, emphasizing the disregard for the fundamental principles of democracy.

Commending the Supreme Court's remarks, particularly Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud's declaration that they will not permit the demise of democracy in such a manner, citizens called for the resignation of Anil Masih as the nominated councillor. This request aimed to ensure that court proceedings remain uninfluenced by his presence.

Anil Masih, the presiding officer, is facing allegations of intentionally invalidating votes. In response, Masih informed TOI that during the commotion, opposition councillors had torn some ballot papers. He asserted that he changed 11 ballot papers based on objections raised by members. Masih clarified that he insisted on completing the process according to the bylaws before allowing the presence of representatives from the opposition bloc. However, before he could summon their representatives, the opposition councillors disrupted the proceedings, seized the ballot papers, and fled. Fortunately, marshals present intervened and recovered the torn ballot papers. Masih maintained that his actions were in accordance with the rules and regulations of the election process.

An actively involved member of the Chandigarh BJP, Anil Masih serves as a nominated municipal councillor and is affiliated with the party's minority wing. Demonstrating commitment and active participation in various party events, Masih has been associated with the BJP since 2015. Recognizing his dedication and capabilities, he was nominated as a councillor in the Chandigarh MC House in October 2022.
