Microsoft Outage Causes Global IT Chaos; several sectors are affected

On July 19, 2024, a significant outage impacted Microsoft services worldwide, causing widespread disruptions across various industries. The outage primarily affected Microsoft 365 services, including Microsoft Teams, Outlook, PowerBI, and Azure cloud services.

Airports and the airline business suffered greatly as a result of the global system failures, which resulted in manual check-ins, flight delays, cancellations, and even complete aircraft shutdowns. Airlines operating in India, including SpiceJet, IndiGo, Akasa Air, Vistara, Air India, and Air India Express, encountered issues on Friday. Airports with large passenger volumes, such as Delhi Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, were particularly affected by this cyber intrusion.

The outage impacted several finance companies, including Barclays, Macquarie Capital, JP Morgan, Chase & Co., and Brazilian lender Bradesco.

The biggest bank in Australia, Commonwealth Bank, was having problems transferring money instantly. After several interruptions, the services of the major South African financial institutions, Capitec Bank and Absa, were resumed.

Sky News in Britain stopped broadcasting for several hours, running at reduced capacity and without many of its regular programs. The national broadcaster of Australia, ABC, said that there was a "major network outage."

The worldwide digital disruption affected healthcare services in Germany, the Netherlands, England, and other countries. The non-profit hospital network Mass General Brigham, located in the United States, was forced to postpone non-urgent surgeries, treatments, and doctor visits for the day.

The outage was attributed to a network configuration issue that led to widespread service failures across multiple regions. Microsoft responded by engaging multiple teams to investigate and mitigate the issue
