Attempted Strike on Diego Garcia Raises Questions Over Missile Range Capabilities

US officials say missiles launched toward Diego Garcia did not reach the base, amid rising regional tensions.

Iran Launches Missiles Toward US-UK Base in Indian Ocean; Officials Report No Impact

Has the war spilled over to a new front? Iran fired missiles at a US-British air base in the Indian Ocean.

For the first time, Iran has fired its medium-range ballistic missiles targeting the US-UK Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean. According to US officials, both missiles did not reach the base, but this move has made it clear that Iran is now trying to show its power far and wide.

One missile failed in flight, tried to intercept another

According to the US, the first missile went down in the air. An American warship fired an SM-3 interceptor towards the second missile. Whether this interception was successful or not has not yet been confirmed.

Diego Garcia is about 4,000 kilometers from Iran. This distance is much higher than Iran's declared missile capability. Iran has previously said it keeps the range of missiles up to 2,000 km, but the attack has raised new questions about its capabilities. Some research institutes claim that Iran may already have missiles with a range of 3,000-4,000 km.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently said that the country has deliberately limited the range of its missiles to 2,000 km. Iran has been repeating this claim time and again.

The opinion of several independent research centers differs from Iran's claim. Iran Watch (Wisconsin Project) says that Iran is likely to have missiles up to 4,000 km.

At the same time, the Alma Research Center (Israel) believes that some of Iran's missiles can reach 3,000 km. Apart from this, Iran's new missile 'Kheibar/Khorramshahr-4' is said to have a range of 2,000 km, but many experts consider its possible extension to 3,000-4,000 km.
