HMPV in India: 5 New Cases Reported—Should You Be Concerned?

The emergence of five confirmed Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India alarmed Indians about the possibility of another Covid-19-style outbreak, since China is already battling another respiratory virus, precisely five years after the coronavirus pandemic began.

A common respiratory virus, the human metapneumovirus (hMPV) usually causes moderate symptoms similar to a cold. Although scientists initially discovered it in 2001, studies reveal that it has been present in human populations since the 1970s.

Around the world, the virus causes 4–16% of acute respiratory infections; incidences typically peak between November and May. Infants who are exposed to hMPV for the first time and those with compromised immune systems may experience more severe symptoms, even though most adults have established immunity via prior exposure.

In Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, five infants tested positive with the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) on Monday.  One case of HMPV was reported in Gujarat in a two-month-old newborn who tested positive for the virus, while Tamil Nadu reported two cases, one in Chennai and one in Salem. After receiving treatment in a hospital, all patients' health conditions are considered stable.

According to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, there is no cause for concern as the government is keeping a careful eye on the situation. According to him, there has not been a spike in any of the prevalent respiratory viral infections in the nation, and HMPV is not a new virus.

In response to recent reports of HMPV in China, Nadda stated in a video message that the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Health Ministry, and the ICMR—the nation's top health research organization—are closely monitoring the situation in China and its neighbouring nations.

While the emergence of HMPV cases is a cause for vigilance, it does not warrant undue alarm. By following preventive measures and staying informed, individuals can protect themselves and their families from this respiratory infection.
