Shubman Gill fined ₹12 lakh for slow over rate

Shubman Gill, skipper of Gujarat Titans, has been punished by the IPL after his side was found to have maintained a slow over rate during the IPL 2024 match against CSK. At Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill was fined ₹12,000 after their team was deemed to have maintained a slower pace during their IPL 2024 clash against Chennai Super Kings. In the 17th iteration of the competition, this was the side's first overrating offence. "Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill was penalized for the slow over rate his team maintained on March 26 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings. Gill was fined ₹12,000 because it was his team's first violation of the season in relation to exceeding the minimum rate under the IPL Code of Conduct, the IPL said in a statement. After Hardik Pandya joined Mumbai Indians in search of another captain's job, Gill took charge of the team and on Sunday won his first match The youthful opening batsman got off to a winning start when GT beat MI in the tournament opener a few days ago, but Gill's GT finished second on Tuesday.

New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra bowled out Gujarat Titans for 63 runs, hitting 46 and taking three catches to guide the defending Chennai Super Kings to their second straight IPL win.

In his first IPL season, left-hander Ravindra scored in 20 balls, while Chennai skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad added 46 as the team won 206–6 at home. Gujarat, captained by Shubman Gill, were restricted to 143-8 by seam bowlers Mustafizur Rahman, Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande claiming two wickets each. This was Gujarat's biggest IPL defeat by runs.

CSK's Shivam Dube top-scored with 51 off 23 deliveries to boost the team's total after Ravindra and Gaikwad's opening partnership of 62 gave them an early lead.

After guiding the franchise to its sixth IPL win the previous year, veteran skipper M.S. Dhoni surprised his supporters by handing over the Chennai captaincy to veteran Vikram Gaikwad ahead of the T20 competition. Gaikwad used the leak to his advantage after surviving an early reprieve to lead the team to victory against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL opener last week.

Left-handed batsman Ravindra continued to be stubborn as he hit three sixes and six fours. Rashid Khan, the Afghanistan leg-spinner who played for Gujarat, prevented Ravindra from reaching his fifty runs. Meanwhile, Gaikwad was caught by Australia's Spencer Johnson. Dube completed his fifty in just 22 balls before falling to Rashid in the 19th over, who grabbed two wickets but gave up 49 runs.
