Indian Premier League side Delhi Caps have added South African fast bowler Lizaad Williams to replace Mumbai Indians batsman Harry Brook. Brook withdrew from the competition to mourn the loss of his grandmother. Williams, 30, has played two Tests, four ODIs and eleven T20 Internationals for South Africa since making his international debut in 2021.
He joined the Delhi Caps for a base price of ₹50 lakh. "Lizaad Williams, the South African fast bowler, has been signed by the Delhi Capitals as a replacement for England's Harry Brook for the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2024," the team announced in a statement. After his grandmother died in February, Brook, who was paid ₹4 million by the Delhi Capitals, retired from the league. “I was ecstatic to be selected by the Delhi Capitals and couldn't wait to meet everyone. While I don't think I should explain my personal reasons for my choice, I am aware that many others will want to know. That's why after downloading he said, "I want to share it on my social media page."
"I lost my grandmother last month, she was my rock and I spent a large part of my childhood at her home; my attitude in life and love of cricket was shaped by her and my late grandfather," the 25-year-old wrote. Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in his first IPL season last year, Brook set the stage alight with a 55-ball century against Kolkata Knight Riders only to have a lacklustre finish. Overall, he scored only 190 runs in 11 matches after the team invested ₹13.25 crore to sign him. Additionally, Brook pulled out of England's recent five-Test series in India after attending the UAE pre-tour camp.
