From Vinesh Phogat to Aman Sehrawat: The Journey of Indian Wrestlers to the Olympics in Paris

The Wrestling Federation of India has said that athletes who have met the Olympic quota will compete in the multi-sport mega event, there will be no trials to select wrestlers for the Paris trials. The five wrestlers requested in a letter that the trials not take place because it would interfere with their Olympic preparations in Paris. The board decided on this option. But for wrestlers like Ravi Dahiya, who missed the quota for the Olympics, the decision was a death blow.

Dahiya, who lost to Aman in the selection trials for two Olympic qualifying events in Paris, is recovering from a knee ailment. Six Indian wrestlers will now compete in the Paris Olympics. Aman Sehrawat (57kg) will be the only wrestler from the nation, while Vinesh Phogat (50kg), Antim Panghal (53kg), Anshu Malik (57kg), Nisha Dahiya (68kg) and Reetika Hooda (76kg) the women's division. Vinesh Phogat technically dominated Asian Championship bronze medalist Miran Cheon of Korea Republic 10-0 in the women's 50 kg category at the Olympic qualifier in the Asian Games.

22-year-old Anshu secured her quota by defeating Kalmira Bilimbek Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan 12-1 in the quarter-finals and Laylokhon Sobir of Uzbekistan 11-0 in the semi-finals due to her superior technical ability. World under-23 champion Reetika Hooda defeated Eunja Hwang of South Korea, Enkh Amar of Mongolia and Juan Wang of the People's Republic of China to advance to the semi-finals of the Olympic qualifiers in the Asian bout in the women's 76 kg division. She then won the quota match by defeating Hui Tsz Chang of Chinese Taipei 7-0 to secure India's second Olympic berth.

Meanwhile, Nisha Dahiya won the quota in the women's 68 kg freestyle division at the Istanbul World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers. Another prominent Indian wrestler, Antim Panghal, won a bronze medal at the World Championships to secure India's Olympic qualification in the women's 53 kg division.
