Former Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Om Prakash was found dead in mysterious conditions, leaving the state's police force in shock. Officials have opened an investigation into the death, though official information is still limited.
Om Prakash, who was a member of the Indian Police Service (IPS) belonging to the 1981 batch, enjoyed an illustrious career that lasted many decades. He worked in multiple roles such as Assistant Superintendent of Police at Harapanahalli, Superintendent of Police at more than one district, and high-ranking roles such as Additional Director General of Police (Crime and Technical Services) and Transport Commissioner. He was given the position of the state's DGP and Inspector General of Police in 2015, where he put a special thrust on curbing terrorism and woman and child harassment crimes.
During his term of office, he was victim to a telephonic phishing attack in one very high-profile incident, where ₹10,000 was lost.
The cybercrime wing later nabbed two suspects from Delhi related to the scam.
The incident of his death has been surrounded by controversy, particularly against a backdrop of reported corruption in the police force. Past reports have included allegations that the police service was corrupt to the core, and that bribes were involved in the suspension of police personnel.
While probes continue, both the people and the police fraternity await further reports regarding why and how Om Prakash was killed. His tragic death remains the watershed moment of Karnataka police history, leading both to considerations regarding his achievements as well as flaws of the Karnataka police department.
