Counting Begins for Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly Polls: High Stakes for Key Alliances

The Election Commission will make public the results of today's elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra. Vote counting is in progress. In Maharashtra, the powerful Congress-Shiv Sena (UBT)-NCP (SCP) coalition faced off against the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which comprises the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP. The JMM-Congress combination faced off against the BJP and its allies in a fierce electoral struggle in Jharkhand.

On November 20, Maharashtra held a single-phase election. The final voter participation increased from 61.1 percent in 2019 to 66.05 percent. In the Kolhapur district, 76.63 percent of voters cast ballots. The vote total for Gadchiroli was 75.26 percent. Mumbai recorded the lowest voting turnout, at 52.07 percent. Voter turnout in Mumbai suburbs was 55.95 percent. 288 polling stations have been created, including one for the Nanded Lok Sabha by-election. Each assembly constituency will be supervised by 288 counting observers, of whom two would be tasked with keeping an eye on the Nanded Lok Sabha by-election count.

In Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena ran 81 seats, the BJP ran 149 assembly seats, and the NCP, led by Ajit Pawar, ran candidates in 59 seats. The Congress put up 101 candidates, the Shiv Sena (UBT) put up 95, and the NCP (SCP) put up 86 in the opposition's MVA camp. All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) and the Bahujan Samaj Party, two unaligned parties, ran for 17 and 237 seats, respectively.

Elections for the Jharkhand assembly were conducted in two stages on November 13 and 20. 43 constituencies out of the 81 seats in the state were voted on in the first phase, while 38 seats were voted on in the second. The state's highest voter participation since its creation in 2000 was 67.74 percent. JMM leader Hemant Soren and his wife Kalpana Soren were among the 1,211 candidates that ran in the elections. Rabindra Nath Mahato, the assembly speaker, and Babulal Marandi, a BJP leader, are also involved. Other notable figures were former chief minister Champai Soren from Seraikela, AJSU Party chairman Sudesh Mahto from Silli, Sita Soren (CM Hemant Soren's sister-in-law) from Jamtara, and Deepika Pandey Singh of the Congress from Mahagama.

The alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party ran in the Jharkhand election on the grounds of suspected infiltration and corruption. By promising welfare programmes, CM Hemant Soren's party and his ally, the Congress, tried to win over voters. JMM further claimed that the Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate had been unleashed on opposition politicians, including Hemant Soren, by the BJP-led central government.

As per early trends, Maharashtra seems to be heading towards a tightly contested finish, with no clear majority emerging in the first few rounds of counting. In Jharkhand, the JMM-led coalition and the BJP are neck and neck. As the day progresses, the final results are expected to shed light on the political trajectory of both states. The outcomes will not only determine the leadership in Maharashtra and Jharkhand but also set the tone for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, making this a critical day in India’s political calendar.
