Tensions were reported in Bengaluru after protests broke out over an event linked to Umar Khalid. The programme, held at the Bengaluru International Centre, involved a discussion and reading session based on a book centered around Khalid’s life and experiences. The situation escalated when members of the Bharatiya Janata Party objected to the event.
BJP leaders, including P. C. Mohan, raised concerns and submitted a memorandum to police authorities, questioning the need for such an event. Protesters gathered outside the venue, raising slogans and demanding cancellation of the programme. Police intervened, detained several demonstrators, and increased security around the area to maintain law and order.
Despite the protests, the event proceeded under police protection. Prominent personalities such as historian Ramachandra Guha, actor Prakash Raj, and historian Janaki Nair were expected to be part of the session. Authorities have stated that appropriate measures were taken to ensure the event concluded peacefully, while the broader political debate around the issue continues.
