BJP's Landslide Victory in Delhi: Modi's Party Ends AAP's Decade-Long Rule

PM Modi’s direct outreach and popularity played a crucial role in swaying voters in BJP’s favor.

BJP's Landslide Victory in Delhi: Modi's Party Ends AAP's Decade-Long Rule

After 27 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party will form the government in Delhi, the capital of India, after securing a resounding election victory. According to figures from the Election Commission of India (EC), the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is ahead in 22 seats in the 70-member legislative assembly, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won in 48 seats. The government can be formed by a party that receives more than the halfway threshold of 35 seats. Modi commented on X, "Development prevails, good governance triumphs," and he promised that his party would do all possible to advance Delhi.

With this win, BJP has managed to dismantle the decade-long rule of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP, which had swept the previous three assembly elections. The saffron party’s campaign, centered around governance, development, and nationalistic rhetoric, struck a chord with voters, leading to an overwhelming mandate in its favor.

Speaking at a victory rally, PM Modi thanked Delhiites for their support and reaffirmed his commitment to making the national capital a model of governance. “This victory is a testament to the people’s faith in our vision for a New India. We will ensure that Delhi becomes a shining example of progress and prosperity,” he said amid chants of ‘Modi, Modi.’

Arvind Kejriwal, who led the AAP government for the past decade, conceded defeat and congratulated BJP on its victory. Addressing his supporters, he said, “We respect the people’s mandate. AAP will continue to work for the welfare of Delhi and uphold its commitment to honest governance.”

AAP, which had built its voter base on free electricity, water, and quality education policies, struggled to retain its stronghold as BJP countered with its vision of development and nationalism.

With this massive victory, BJP is set to form the government in Delhi after a long gap, signaling a new political landscape in the national capital. The win also bolsters the party’s position ahead of the 2029 general elections, reinforcing Modi’s influence on the Indian political stage.
