IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts: Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh

On Wednesday, December 11, and Thursday, December 12, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rains in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh because of a "well-marked low-pressure region" over the southwest and adjacent southeast Bay of Bengal. A "yellow alert" has been issued for rain in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka for the next two days, while a "orange alert" has been issued for heavy rain in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe.

Up to the mid-troposphere, the related upper air cyclonic circulation is present. During the next 24 hours, the weather system is most likely to keep moving west-northwest towards the shores of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka, the IMD stated in its most recent report.

The Chennai regional meteorological centre predicts that on December 11, there will likely be thunderstorms and lightning in one or two locations along with light to moderate rain in several parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. In isolated locations in the Tamil Nadu districts of Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai, as well as Karaikal, heavy to extremely high rainfall is anticipated. Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, and Tiruvallur districts of Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry, are also at risk of experiencing heavy rainfall.

Local administrations have initiated measures to mitigate risks, including clearing storm drains and monitoring reservoirs. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to stay updated with official announcements and prepare for potential evacuations.

The rainfall is expected to ease by midweek as the depression weakens, but authorities continue to monitor its trajectory closely to ensure public safety
