The Rohingya are a stateless Indo-Aryan ethnolinguistic minority primarily adhering to Islam, originating from Rakhine State, Myanmar. Prior to the Rohingya genocide in 2017, during which over 740,000 sought refuge in Bangladesh, an estimated 1.4 million Rohingya resided in Myanmar. The Rohingya are stripped of citizenship according to the 1982 Myanmar nationality law. Restrictions exist regarding their freedom of movement, access to public education, and eligibility for civil service employment.
