Heavy rains lash South Delhi triggering red alert; IMD warns of more intense showers ahead.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a red alert in South Delhi after an intense spell of rain drenched the region on Sunday. The alert follows fears of waterlogging, flash floods, and traffic snarls across the city. Emergency services have been put on high alert as Delhi’s drainage systems strain under continuous downpour.
According to IMD, the monsoon trough has shifted closer to Delhi-NCR, which is causing prolonged and intense rainfall. Meteorologists have cautioned residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor official updates for safety. Local authorities have been instructed to ensure that drainage systems are functioning efficiently to minimize urban flooding.
The Sunday downpour recorded over 110 mm of rainfall in just a few hours, paralyzing daily life and disrupting metro services and flight schedules. Schools in low-lying areas have been advised to stay shut on Monday, and disaster management teams are actively deployed.
With more rainfall expected over the next 48–72 hours, residents are urged to take precautions, stock essentials, and avoid flood-prone routes. Authorities have also asked citizens to report any obstructions or emergencies through helplines set up across municipal zones.
