Two Michigan men allegedly plotted an ISIS-inspired Halloween attack and have now been federally charged.
Federal prosecutors have brought charges against Mohmed Ali and Majed Mahmoud, both from Michigan, accusing them of conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) by transferring firearms and ammunition intended for use in a terrorist act.
According to an affidavit filed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the defendants acquired AR-15-style rifles and other weapons, practiced at shooting ranges, and engaged in encrypted online chats suggesting they were preparing for an attack.
Investigators allege the men selected the date of October 31 (Halloween) for their planned operation and conducted reconnaissance in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale, Michigan, with potential targets including bars and clubs that cater to the LGBTQ+ community.
The criminal complaint also mentions at least five individuals, including a juvenile, were involved in the group’s activities though only Ali and Mahmoud are currently charged.
In a social-media statement, FBI Director Kash Patel hailed the arrests as preventing a “massacre” but the case has drawn scrutiny within the Department of Justice over the timing of the disclosure.
As of now, the accused have not entered pleas; legal proceedings are ongoing. The case underscores continuing concerns about domestic radicalisation, use of encrypted communications by extremist networks, and the targeting of high-profile cultural dates such as Halloween for attacks.
