Shashi Tharoor Reacts to Rahul Gandhi Backing Trump's ‘Dead Economy’ Remark

Shashi Tharoor responded to Rahul Gandhi’s support of Donald Trump's 'dead economy' comment, emphasizing the need for cautious political messaging on international remarks.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor offered a nuanced take on fellow party member Rahul Gandhi's endorsement of former US President Donald Trump’s claim that India’s economy is “dead.” While not directly criticizing Gandhi, Tharoor highlighted the risks of aligning domestic political narratives with foreign critiques, especially from controversial international figures.

Speaking at an event, Tharoor pointed out that while there is valid criticism of the Indian economy under the current government, echoing Donald Trump—who has his own political baggage—might not always be the most strategic move. He suggested that such statements can be used by opponents to question national loyalty or paint a negative image of India on the global stage.

Tharoor, known for his diplomatic finesse and articulation, reaffirmed that the Congress party remains committed to constructive economic critique backed by facts and data. He emphasized that leaders should focus on offering solutions rather than merely amplifying foreign rhetoric.

The controversy comes after Rahul Gandhi, in a recent address, cited Trump’s remarks to underline his argument that India’s economy is faltering under the Modi-led BJP government. The BJP has since accused Gandhi of siding with foreign interests to defame India internationally.

Tharoor’s statement reflects an internal push for balance within the opposition ranks, reinforcing that political discourse, while critical, must remain rooted in national interest and maturity.
