A major tragedy was averted as an IndiGo flight from Ahmedabad to Diu aborted takeoff after one of its engines caught fire.
The incident occurred early morning at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, just moments before takeoff. Flight 6E-7284, an IndiGo Airbus A320neo, was accelerating down the runway when the pilots observed flames emitting from the right engine. Following standard emergency protocol, the takeoff was immediately aborted, and the aircraft was brought to a halt.
Emergency response teams were promptly dispatched, and all 58 passengers and 4 crew members were safely evacuated through emergency slides. No injuries were reported. The fire was quickly extinguished, and airport operations resumed shortly after the situation was under control.
Preliminary reports suggest a possible engine malfunction, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the incident. IndiGo has confirmed that the passengers were accommodated on an alternative flight to Diu, and the affected aircraft has been grounded for inspection.
This incident once again raises concerns about aircraft engine safety and the rigorousness of pre-flight checks. However, aviation experts have praised the flight crew’s quick decision-making and efficient handling of the emergency.
Passengers onboard recounted the terrifying moments but expressed relief and gratitude towards the crew and emergency responders. “It was shocking to see flames, but the evacuation was smooth. We’re thankful it didn’t turn into something worse,” said a passenger.
IndiGo released an official statement expressing regret for the inconvenience caused and assured full cooperation with the DGCA to determine the cause of the fire and ensure such incidents do not recur.
